The Problem

Dark vessels are ships that have deliberately disabled their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders to avoid detection. Without AIS, these vessels become invisible to the monitoring systems that governments, insurers, and compliance teams rely on.

The reasons for going dark vary. Sanctions-designated vessels disable AIS to evade enforcement. Smugglers and traffickers operate without transponders to avoid interception. Military vessels go dark for operational security. Illegal fishing fleets disable tracking to operate in protected waters.

The scale of the problem is significant and growing. State-sponsored dark fleets have expanded dramatically in recent years, driven by sanctions on Russian, Iranian, and Venezuelan oil exports. Aging tankers purchased specifically for sanctions evasion now form a parallel shipping infrastructure that operates almost entirely outside conventional monitoring.

Traditional maritime monitoring depends on AIS, a cooperative system that only works when vessels choose to participate. When they don’t, AIS-dependent platforms see nothing.

How Theia Detects Dark Vessels

Theia detects dark vessels using satellite imagery, not AIS.
This means detection is independent of whether a vessel is cooperating with tracking systems.

SAR Detection

Synthetic aperture radar scans ocean areas and identifies vessel-sized objects regardless of weather, time of day, or transponder status. SAR does not require the vessel to emit any signal.

GLOBAL SIGNAL MONITOR

EO Confirmation

Electro-optical satellite imagery provides visual confirmation of SAR detections, enabling vessel classification, size estimation, and behavioral context.

Cross-Referencing

Detected vessels are cross-referenced against known AIS positions. Vessels detected by satellite but not broadcasting AIS are flagged as dark.

Attribution

Dark detections are fed into Theia’s attribution pipeline, which uses behavioral analysis, historical patterns, and multi-source intelligence to identify the vessel despite the absence of cooperative signals.

The result is intelligence on vessels that
AIS-dependent platforms cannot see.
Key Stats

30M km² analyzed daily

147,000+ dark vessel detections

Detection coverage spans all major ocean basins and chokepoints
